Who we are
This website, thephalanxproject.co, and the mobile apps we publish are operated by The Phalanx Project LLC ("The Phalanx Project", "we", "us"), a limited liability company based in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, United States. The Phalanx Project LLC is the controller of the personal information described in this policy.
This policy covers this website and our general practices across our apps. Each app also has its own privacy policy, linked from its App Store or Google Play listing and its website, that describes exactly what that app collects. Where an app's own policy is more specific, it controls for that app.
This website
This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics or advertising trackers, and loads its fonts and images from our own domain.
Server logs
Our hosting provider, Netlify, automatically records basic technical information when a page is requested: your IP address, browser type, the page requested, the referring page, and the time. These logs are used only to operate, secure and troubleshoot the site.
Contact form
If you write to us through the form on our Support page, we receive your name, your email address, the app your message is about, and your message. We use this only to answer you and to keep a record of the conversation. Form submissions are processed by Netlify and delivered to our inbox.
Our apps
Every app we publish follows these commitments:
- Only what the app needs. We collect the information an app needs to provide its features, and nothing for its own sake. If an app reaches the network for a feature you choose to use, such as looking up a public record or a product photo, it sends only what that request requires.
- No selling, no ad tracking. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for advertising or cross-app tracking.
- Payments go through the stores. Purchases and subscriptions are handled by Apple or Google. We never receive your payment card details.
Record-keeping apps (Loadout Ledger, Glovebox)
These apps are offline first and store what you enter on your device. Where an app offers an optional cloud account, your records are encrypted on your device before they leave, with a key derived from a password only you know. We cannot read them, and we cannot recover them if you lose that password.
Community apps (The Vanguard)
A community app has to store what members share so that other members can see it. To run The Vanguard we keep your name, email address and password (stored only as a secure hash), the profile details you choose to add, the posts, comments, reactions, event RSVPs and direct messages you send, and a device token if you turn on push notifications. This content is stored on our servers and travels over encrypted connections, but it is not end-to-end encrypted. It is visible only to signed-in members, according to where you post it, and reported content may be reviewed by community moderators. We use it only to run the community, send the notifications and emails you choose to receive, and keep the community safe.
Apple and Google may collect information when you download, update or buy an app through their stores. That collection is governed by their own privacy policies.
How we share information
We share personal information only:
- with service providers that run parts of our service for us, such as website and app hosting, encrypted sync storage, email and push notifications, under terms that limit their use of it to providing that service;
- when the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety or property of our users or others;
- as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, in which case this policy continues to apply to the information transferred;
- with your consent.
Retention and security
We keep contact messages only as long as needed to help you and to keep a reasonable record of support conversations. Data stored on your device stays there until you delete it or remove the app. Encrypted sync data and community content are kept until you delete them or close your account; content you shared with other members may take a short time to clear from backups.
We use encryption in transit on every connection and access controls on our systems. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we design our record-keeping apps so that your records never reach us in readable form.
We are based in the United States, and information you send us is processed in the United States.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us to tell you what personal information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it. Depending on where you live, including California and the European Economic Area, you may have additional rights under local law, such as the right to data portability or to object to certain processing. We will not treat you differently for exercising them.
To make a request, write to us through our contact form. We may need to confirm your identity before acting on it. You can also delete an app's data at any time by deleting the app, and delete a cloud account from within the app or by asking us.
Children
Our website and apps are not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here and update the effective date above. If a change materially affects how we handle information we already hold, we will give notice on this site or in the affected app before it takes effect.
